About The Position

Under the direct supervision of a phlebotomy supervisor or designee, this role performs clerical, phlebotomy (for all age/population groups), computer functions related to ordering and collection, EKG, vitals, collection of blood specimens off-site including nursing home patients, and other patient care duties in a patient care unit/area. This is a full-time position (80 hours/biweekly) with shifts including Day/Evening/Nights (8 Hours), specifically 3a-11:30a. Nursing home collections and inpatient collection duties are required, including weekends and rotations.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program and/or graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program or the equivalent in relative experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required.
  • Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required.
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
  • Must have valid driver's license in the current state of residence.
  • Driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in phlebotomy preferred.
  • Proficiency in EKG preferred.
  • Computer literacy and typing skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Completes phlebotomy competency for all age/population groups.
  • Completes phlebotomy quiz for policy/procedure and proper specimen containers/tubes.
  • Completes Meditech computer competency.
  • Completes specimen accession competency, if applicable.
  • Attends departmental and hospital inservices and education programs.
  • Participates in the orientation of new employees.
  • Willingly helps all co-workers in completing work assignments.
  • Performs phlebotomy duties to include performing venipunctures and processing specimens, assuring proper specimen handling.
  • Responsible for performing clerical duties, including supply maintenance, patient short registrations and data entry as necessary.
  • Performs EKGs (Summit Health).
  • Performs vital signs as needed.
  • Performs other patient care duties as assigned.
  • Receives, reviews, performs and processes requisitions, specimens and other duties as assigned.
  • Communicates with nursing regarding status of patient assignments such as patient not available, hard stick, etc.
  • Demonstrates involvement in unit activities - team building.
  • Assesses workload and performs in a manner which facilitates swift and continual movement of clients through the assigned work area.
  • Reviews physician orders for tests. Is able to order lab tests with minimal errors and arranges work to outpatient's established time frames and special requests.
  • Supplies patients with the correct specimen containers and appropriate instructions.
  • Follows hospital/laboratory policies and procedures for proper and correct identification of patients, correct technique and proper labeling of specimens.
  • Uses established policies/procedures for collecting blood/non blood specimens and disposes of contaminated supplies and material following hospital/laboratory guidelines.
  • Restocks supplies in work area.
  • Can independently perform assigned duties after orientation period.
  • Understands and follows hospital fire and safety procedures; knows personal role in case of a fire.
