About The Position

Xanitos, Inc. is hiring Part-time Patient Sitters for 2nd, 3rd and Weekend Shifts at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven, MS. The Patient Sitter is responsible for providing visual and audible observation of assigned patients, aligning with a Registered Nurse (RN) and directed by the Xanitos Leadership team. This role involves monitoring patient condition and behavior, redirecting at-risk behaviors, completing observation reports, and interacting hospitably with staff, patients, and visitors. The sitter must immediately summon nursing staff for assistance or report any unusual or concerning patient behavior. They also collaborate on patient safety issues, ensure the patient environment is safe, assist in calming or reorienting distressed patients, and help maintain an orderly room. Additional duties include escorting patients for testing, participating in hand-off reports, ensuring coverage during breaks, assisting with meal trays, basic patient positioning, and potentially assisting with ambulation if the patient is stable and cleared by a nurse. The role requires respecting hospital and company property, responding to emergencies, taking direction from supervisors and hospital staff, and adhering to department policies and procedures, including confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.

Requirements

  • Post-Offer Medical, Background Screening and Drug Test required.
  • Successful applicants for this position must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent required.
  • Ability to read and understand written English communication including patient identifiers, pick and receiving location, isolation precaution notifications and other important patient information necessary to perform assigned task.
  • CPR AED or basic life support healthcare provider (BLS-HCP) certification required.
  • Any other unit-specific training required by Hospital partner such as but not limited to, the hospital partners new hire orientation.

Nice To Haves

  • Training and certifications required for this role, including BLS/CPR, will be provided by Xanitos.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor both visually and audibly the assigned patient’s condition and behavior at all times.
  • Remain at the bedside of assigned patient at all times, unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
  • Verbally redirect the patient from participating in at risk behaviors.
  • Complete observation reports at the assigned times.
  • Interact hospitably, cheerfully, and supportively with staff, patients, visitors, and work colleagues.
  • Immediately summon the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance, control, or other nursing interventions or exhibits unusual behavior or verbalizations.
  • Immediately report any potentially dangerous behavior or concerning conversations to the nurse.
  • Collaborate to identify and report patient safety issues.
  • Assure patient environment is safe, reporting any safety hazards to the charge nurse.
  • Remove visible hazards and report, as appropriate.
  • Assist in calming and/or reorienting patient in cases of distress, or confusion.
  • Assist with keeping patient's room, safe and in an orderly fashion at all times.
  • Escort patient when diagnostic testing is required.
  • Participate in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patient when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment.
  • Ensure coverage around meal break times and prior to leaving patient for any reason.
  • Assist patient with ordering dietary tray, setting up of patient's meal trays, basic positioning of patient, taking a ride in wheelchair and/or ambulation if patient is stable and gait has been previously determined safe by assigned staff nurse.
  • May assist with ambulation, if directed to by the RN.
  • Respect hospital and company property.
  • Respond rapidly and thoroughly to emergencies, special needs, etc.
  • Take suggestions and direction from supervisors and Hospital staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Honor department’s attendance, break, behavior, dress, personal hygiene, and safety codes.
  • Follow all confidentiality and other regulatory requirements.
  • Comply with all department and hospital educational programs.
  • Behave in a Professional manner.
  • Assist other associates, as necessary.
  • Respond to direction as provided.
  • Maintain all Xanitos company standards.
  • Comply with facility confidentiality and patient’s rights policy as outlined in the facilities HIPAA policies and procedures.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
