About The Position

The Patient Sitter is responsible for providing continuous observation and monitoring of patients who are at risk of self-harm, suicide, or harm to others. The role is crucial in maintaining patient safety and ensuring a safe environment by minimizing the need for restraints through vigilant supervision. This position plays a key role in enhancing patient care and ensuring safety through diligent observation and prompt reporting of patient conditions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be trained in De-Escalation and MOAB training before sitting with a patient, this training and education is provided.
  • Association accredited course in Basic Life Support (BLS) (for clinical staff), or Heartsaver CPR AED (for nonclinical staff), and renewal on a regular basis, with up to a three-month grace period after the expiration date.
  • Strong observational skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Basic understanding of infection control principles.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in healthcare or a caregiving environment is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Provide continuous observation of assigned patients unless relieved by a qualified person.
  • Monitor and report any changes in the patient’s condition or behavior to the patient's nurse.
  • Read to, play cards, or engage in games with patients to maintain a calming environment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff.
  • Notify nursing staff of patient needs and obtain assistance when necessary.
  • Document the presence and utilization of a sitter during the shift.
  • Adhere to infection control procedures to ensure a safe environment.
  • Assist nursing staff during patient interactions if requested.
  • Maintain constant attendance with the patient to ensure safety.
  • Utilize therapeutic communication to engage with the patient and de-escalate potential issues.
  • Respect patient privacy and confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Participate in training sessions and meetings to stay informed about patient care protocols.
  • Report any environmental hazards or concerns to the nursing staff.
  • Follow hospital policies and procedures related to patient safety and care.
  • Support the patient’s well-being by providing reassurance and company.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
