About The Position

The Patient Services Technician II, under the direction of the area supervisor, performs daily phlebotomy activities of the Patient Services Center (PSC) or In-office Patient Services Technician (PST) accurately and on time. This role involves interacting with clients, patients, and other PathGroup personnel professionally and courteously. The technician performs both forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties with confidence, following established practices and procedures.

Requirements

  • 3 years of Prior job-related experience is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of tenure with PathGroup required.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Phlebotomist Certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers appropriately and treat all customers in a courteous manner.
  • Manage the needs of two or more assigned locations.
  • Ensure all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
  • Collect specimens according to established procedures, explaining the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) clearly and courteously.
  • Reduce patient anxiety by providing a calm environment before, during, and after the collection process.
  • Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
  • Dispose of contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
  • Complete requisitions accurately in Pathconnect and/or other PathGroup computer applications.
  • Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into the computer, requiring attention to detail for accuracy.
  • Communicate with clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify test(s) ordered, and obtain accurate billing information (e.g., diagnosis codes, UPIN information).
  • Research test/client information utilizing the lab computer system.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
  • Package specimens for transport, storing samples according to required temperature, placing them in appropriate containers/tubes, accurately labeling, and following specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens.
  • Maintain required records and documentation, including daily records and all appropriate PSC/PST locations (IOPST) logs.
  • Abide by all regulatory, company, and departmental regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures, including the Corporate Compliance Program.
  • Assist with the compilation of monthly statistics and data.
  • Perform basic clerical duties, such as filing, faxing, and preparing mail.
  • Perform electronic data entry.
  • Approve time in attendance software by noon on the Monday following the end of the pay period.
  • Submit accurate expense and travel logs on Monday for the week prior or as directed by management.
  • Demonstrate organizational commitment.
  • Adhere to departmental and company code of grooming and dress code and lab coat policies, appearing neat and clean at all times.
  • Utilize time appropriately and be capable of maintaining fluctuating patient flow.
  • Display courteous and professional behavior to clients, patients, and co-workers.
  • Communicate with co-workers and clients in a way that promotes a harmonious and cooperative working environment.
  • Answer the telephone in a friendly and helpful manner, incorporating the company name, self-identification, and a helpful statement.
  • Perform duties independently.
  • Communicate pertinent information/issues to supervisor, manager, or group leader for resolution.
  • Contribute to a positive work climate and to the team effort of the department and company.
  • Ensure facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair, taking appropriate action to advise Group Leader or Supervisor of required repairs and maintenance.
  • Assist with periodic inventory counts, report shortages and problems to group leader or supervisor as they occur.
  • Exercise all laboratory safety precautions and adhere to lab procedures as stated in procedure manuals.
  • Utilize proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to ensure patient and personal safety.
  • Perform all job responsibilities in alignment with the industry's best security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information and other sensitive company data.
  • Be familiar with and abide by the Corporate Compliance Program and all Corporate policies, including the Privacy and Security policies.
