The PSR is also responsible for identifying insurance coverage, benefits, patient out-of-pocket expenses, and collecting co-insurance and co-payments. They utilize electronic systems to confirm coverage, resolve eligibility issues, and screen uninsured patients for urgent status, following charity procedures and referring for financial counseling as needed. They maintain knowledge of computer software for eligibility verification, identify at-risk balances related to Medicare and Medicaid, and communicate potential financial impacts to patients. The role also involves collecting and analyzing clinical data for prior authorization and precertification, staying current with insurance requirements and federal/state billing regulations, and ensuring completion of policies for identification and notification of Primary Care Physicians for HMO coverage. The PSR informs relevant departments of out-of-network or non-covered service limitations. The PSR also participates in departmental team building, in-services, and assists leaders with special assignments. For registrars at offsite imaging centers, additional duties include performing CPOE for exams, light cleaning of changing areas, printing and distributing patient results CDs, and escorting patients to changing areas.
