The Patient Service Representative is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which serves as the foundation for the patient's medical record used by the entire healthcare team. This role is crucial in preventing duplicate medical records, ensuring patient safety, and facilitating accurate billing. The representative will check in and register patients, collect and verify demographic, guarantor, and insurance information, and discuss and collect co-pays and other patient financial responsibilities. Accurate information at registration ensures timely payment and prevents billing issues. The role also involves maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, understanding insurance basics, recognizing contracted plans, and discussing financial obligations with patients, referring them to Financial Advocates when necessary. The representative must be knowledgeable about government regulations and compliance requirements such as HIPAA, EMTALA, Consent for Treatment, Patient Rights and Responsibilities, IMM, MOON, Notice of Privacy Practices, MSPQ, and ABN, and obtain necessary signatures. Additionally, the role may involve scheduling appointments, coordinating cancellations and reschedules, and providing detailed information to patients regarding preparations, arrival times, and directions. The Patient Service Representative is expected to create a welcoming and professional environment through exceptional customer service, greet patients and visitors, answer telephones, and offer assistance with transportation, directions, wheelchairs, and interpreter services. They will also monitor and work assigned electronic health record work queues according to departmental processes.
