About The Position

The Patient Safety Technician supports Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values, follows its Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. The role provides bedside and remote safety observation for patients at risk of injuring themselves or others. The technician remains with assigned bedside patients unless relieved by an appropriate staff member, helps calm and reorient patients, identifies and reports hazards, and may assist with activities of daily living as delegated by a supervising RN. The role also remotely monitors multiple patients using continuous video monitoring, redirects patients from risky behavior, and summons appropriate staff when needed.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

Remain at the bedside of an assigned patient at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
Provide calming and reorienting conversation when a patient is agitated or confused.
Identify and remove hazards from the patient and the patient's environment, and report hazards as appropriate.
As delegated by a supervising RN, assist patients with activities of daily living, including ambulating, toileting, bed making, and positioning.
Provide continuous video-based safety observation for patients identified as at risk of causing injury to themselves or others.
Offer basic comfort measures and address patients’ emotional needs using encouragement, distraction, coping strategies, cognitive stimulation activities, and de-escalation techniques within the scope of the role.
Remotely monitor multiple patients through continuous video monitoring.
Verbally redirect designated remotely observed patients from engaging in risk behaviors.
Summon appropriate staff using a communication device or STAT Alert Alarm when appropriate.
