About The Position

The Patient Flow Specialist is responsible for managing and optimizing patient flow within IU Health Methodist Hospital and IU Health University Hospital. This role involves assigning new business to appropriate teams, managing patient census data, creating admission orders, triaging consult/transfer calls, and preparing necessary paperwork for patient admissions and transfers. The specialist will work closely with hospitalist teams, ICU teams, and other clinical and operational partners to ensure efficient patient movement and care coordination.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Proficiency in Cerner
• Strong Microsoft Teams and Excel skills
• Excellent communication abilities
• Highly collaborative team mindset
• Detail‑oriented and organized
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple workflows effectively
• Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively with clinical and operational partners.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work professionally with physicians, hospital leadership, patients, and nursing staff at all levels.

Nice To Haves

• Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant or LPN program preferred.
• Previous experience in admitting, bed management, patient placement/throughput, or similar hospital operations preferred, including familiarity with demographic and payer‑related financial requirements.

Responsibilities

• Assign new business to appropriate teams from overnight business
• Add assigned team orders in Cerner
• Calculate daily census
• Send overnight new business and team census to hospitalist teams and ICU teams
• Create admission orders daily for UH and on weekends for MH
• Triage consult/transfer calls throughout the day
• Send new business (i.e., ER admits, consults, post-ops, transfer of cares, direct admits, ICU upgrades and downgrades) to appropriate teams for MH, UH, and ICU
• Prepare UH, MH, and ICU paperwork for the next day
• Calculate ICU team censuses before evening changeover
