About The Position

The Patient Escort is responsible for identifying the correct patient for transport, ensuring the appropriate mode of transport is used based on the patient's condition, and taking necessary precautions for each patient, such as managing oxygen, I-meds, foley catheters, and chest tubes. They must ensure patients are properly covered for privacy and that oxygen tanks are filled daily. This role also involves instructing and training new transport staff, relaying pertinent patient information to supervisors or departments, and informing supervisors of any delays. The Patient Escort must demonstrate knowledge of institutional policies regarding patient care, fire, safety, and infection control, and maintain the cleanliness of carts and wheelchairs, reporting any malfunctioning equipment. Additionally, they will be responsible for making film copies, looking up and filing patient folders, and writing new folders. The ability to handle stressful situations calmly and professionally is essential.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Some computer knowledge
  • Skills in handling and operation of a variety of transportation equipment.
  • ability to tolerate prolonged walking or standing.
  • Ability to work weekend, holidays and different shifts in order to accommodate staffing needs.
  • This position can recognize needs and behaviors of all age groups. Evidence of this can be shown by recognizing levels of development and modifying approach and exhibiting communication skills necessary to interpret age specific responses
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibilities

  • Identify proper patient to be transported by checking armband
  • Make sure mode of transport is appropriate to patient’s condition
  • Make sure proper precautions are taken for each patient, i.e., oxygen, I-med, foley catheter, chest tube, etc
  • Make sure patient is properly covered to protect their privacy
  • Make sure oxygen tanks are filled daily.
  • Instruct and help new transport staff so they are properly trained
  • Make sure any pertinent patient information is relayed to supervisor or proper department/technician
  • Make sure supervisor or departments are aware of any delays in getting patients
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of institutional policies regarding patient care, fire, safety, infection control, etc.
  • Make sure carts are clean and sheets are in place at all times. Report any cart or wheelchair that is not working properly and in need of repair
  • Be able to make film copies.
  • Look up and file patient folders; also write new folders out.
  • Should be able to deal with stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Report patient safety events and near misses in timely fashion
  • Adhere to all behavioral and procedural patient safety practices
  • Promote culture of safety through identifying threats to patient safety and intervening to prevent patient harm
  • Communicate openly and promote team work
  • Report intimidating behavior and other threats to patient safety promptly
