Patient Companion – Chelsea
About The Position
The Patient Companion provides continuous observation and monitoring of assigned patients, notifying nursing staff when a patient requires assistance, control, or other nursing intervention. The companion supports patients while maintaining confidentiality of HIPAA-protected information and following hospital policies. Training is provided, and the assigned nurse briefs the companion on the patient’s anticipated behavior. The companion remains with the assigned patient at all times, maintaining direct observation and never leaving the patient unattended. The role may float among Atrium East (Med/Surg), Atrium or Courtyard Rehab (Inpatient Rehabilitation), Courtyard East (Short Stay and Head Pain), the Emergency Department, and the Intensive Care Unit. This is a contingent, part-time position that is not benefit eligible.
Requirements
- High school diploma.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and self-control in difficult or stressful conditions.
- Ability to maintain attention for long periods of time.
Responsibilities
- Provide continuous, direct observation and monitoring of assigned patients.
- Remain with the assigned patient at all times and never leave the patient unattended.
- Immediately alert nursing staff when a patient requires assistance, exhibits unusual behavior, or needs nursing intervention.
- Receive information from the assigned nurse about the patient’s anticipated behavior.
- Follow hospital policies and protect the confidentiality of HIPAA-protected information.
- Float to assigned units, including Med/Surg, inpatient rehabilitation, short stay and head pain, the Emergency Department, and the Intensive Care Unit.
