About The Position

The Patient Companion provides a safe environment, companionship, and supportive care for patients requiring constant observation as identified by a nurse or physician. The role maintains constant observation and 1:1 supervision, remains in the patient’s clear sight unless nursing staff instruct otherwise, and accompanies patients off the unit for clinical tests, procedures, appointments, or other reasons identified by the care provider. The Patient Companion helps maintain a safe, private, comfortable therapeutic environment; redirects impulsive or harmful behavior; and calls for assistance when unable to redirect a patient or when there is a risk of self-injury. The position participates in shift reports, communicates pertinent information to the Registered Nurse at the end of the shift, talks with patients to keep them focused, and assists with meals when there are no swallowing precautions or carbohydrate-counting requirements. Other duties include making beds, activating bed and/or chair alarms, and helping staff walk patients. This is a Central Region Float Pool position that may require floating to Bloomsburg GBH, Danville GMC, and Shamokin GSACH campuses, including Emergency Departments. The commitment is 40 hours per week, with alternating two-week periods of day and night shifts. Day shifts are 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.; night shifts are 11:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m. The schedule includes every other weekend and holiday. A two-week classroom orientation is required at the start of employment, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Work is typically performed in a clinical environment.
