About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Patient Care Technician to perform specific tasks that assist the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. This position is located in the Stead Family Children's Hospital NICU and is scheduled for 20 hours per week on nights, including every fourth weekend and one summer and one winter holiday. The technician supports patients with clinical tasks, personal care, comfort, mobility, nutrition, and admission, transfer, and discharge activities. The role also involves transporting patients and materials, maintaining equipment and supplies, cleaning and stocking patient-care areas, and reporting relevant information and incidents to the nurse in charge.

Responsibilities

Independently obtain and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
Use medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks, including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal and care for medically isolated patients.
Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, specimen collection, and applying binders or braces.
Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, including phlebotomy, ECG lead or 12-lead placement, and brace or pin-site care.
Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
Provide patients with personal hygiene and comfort care.
Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record intake.
Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
Participate in nursing care conferences and report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
Support patient comfort through social interaction.
Help prepare, properly use, and care for equipment and supplies, and maintain unit neatness and cleanliness.
Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies for diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses, as needed.
Clean areas according to designated guidelines and standards, using approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and housekeeping equipment properly.
Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
