About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Patient Care Technician to perform specific tasks that assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. The position is located at Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, and works 90% time, or 36 hours per week, on nights. The schedule includes every fourth weekend and one summer and one winter holiday. The role includes supporting patients’ care, comfort, mobility, hygiene, and nutrition; assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; transporting patients and supplies; maintaining equipment and unit cleanliness; and communicating relevant patient information to the nurse in charge. Successful candidates must disclose conviction history and undergo a criminal background check and credential and education verification. The position is not eligible for university employment-authorization sponsorship.

Responsibilities

Independently obtain and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
Use medical asepsis while performing tasks such as phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, and care for medically isolated patients.
Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, specimen collection, and applying binders or braces.
Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, including phlebotomy, ECG lead or 12-lead placement, and brace or pin-site care.
Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
Provide patients’ personal hygiene and comfort care.
Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record intake.
Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
Participate in nursing care conferences and report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
Provide patient comfort through social interaction.
Share responsibility for preparing, properly using, and caring for equipment and supplies, and for maintaining unit neatness and cleanliness.
Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies for physician- or nurse-performed diagnostic or treatment procedures as needed.
Clean areas according to designated guidelines and standards, using approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and housekeeping equipment properly.
Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
