About The Position

This role involves performing both clerical/receptionist duties for a nursing unit and providing direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The position requires effective communication, coordination of supplies, accurate patient record maintenance, and collaboration with healthcare team members to ensure continuity of care and meet the holistic needs of patients and their families.

Requirements

  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have successfully completed a minimum of Nurse Aide I course and competency exams.
  • Must be listed as eligible for employment on the Iowa Direct Care Worker Registry (Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals Health Facilities Division).
  • Ability to learn and navigate computer systems including online training modules, employee timesheet, and performance appraisal system.
  • Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.
  • Sitting – Approximately 50% of shift.
  • Standing– Approximately 25% of shift.
  • Walking – Approximately 25% of shift.
  • Lifting – Approximately 35 pounds.
  • Must use proper body mechanics and ergonomics and, as applicable, lifting/moving devices.
  • Twisting – Infrequent.
  • Bending – Moderate.
  • Squat/Kneel – Approximately 25% of shift.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical Secretary training or knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Completion of Nurse Aide II course preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs clerical/receptionist duties for the nursing unit, including answering telephones, taking messages, and directing visitors.
  • Monitors equipment and supplies, coordinating for repair, restocking, and replacement. Orders supplies as needed.
  • Transcribes and processes orders, maintains and updates patient charting forms, and generates necessary paperwork.
  • Supports the nursing profession by contributing to the professional development of peers and colleagues, and actively participating in teams and committees.
  • Uses telecommunication effectively to notify appropriate staff, announces and implements code communication, and utilizes pager systems.
  • Collaborates with providers and other healthcare team members for continuity of care, making phone calls to coordinate patient consults, referrals, and appointments.
  • Accurately maintains patient census, patient level of care, and computer proficiency, including admitting, discharging, and transferring patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient care techniques and supports patient care under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, completing delegated tasks and reporting outcomes.
  • Answers call lights promptly and assists patients with requests.
  • Documents care and observations accurately in the patient record at the point of care, notifying the primary nurse of any changes or concerns.
