About The Position

The Patient Care Technician works in the 30-bed Med Surg Stepdown - 4 South unit at UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham. The unit cares for a wide range of patients and provides a supportive, teaching-focused environment for developing nursing skills and clinical expertise. The technician performs basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision and carries out technical patient care duties as directed by the staff nurse. The position is available as full-time day or night work, with three 12-hour shifts per week. Day shifts run from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, and night shifts run from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am. Requirements

BLS Provider certification obtained within 30 days of hire or job transfer; American Heart Association or American Red Cross certification is accepted.
High school diploma equivalency or one year of applicable cumulative job-specific experience.

Responsibilities

Perform basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision.
Assist patients with ambulation, including moving to a recliner, walking to the bathroom or down the hall, and getting safely to their vehicles after dismissal.
Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living.
Report findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff, and document necessary records.
Keep patient rooms clean and orderly and maintain medical equipment.
Perform technical patient care duties as directed by the staff nurse, including oxygen setup, Foley catheter care, pulse oximetry setup, specimen collection, and EKGs.
Obtain and record vital signs, weight, and intake and output.
Perform other duties as assigned.
