This position provides patient care in the ED Observation Unit, assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. The role involves assisting with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, and reporting changes in patient status to the RN. The Patient Care Technician will perform core nursing assistant responsibilities, including blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, intake and output, specimen collection, and Foley care. Additionally, they will perform at least four of the following tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. The role also includes assuring equipment malfunctions are reported, establishing effective communication with other departments, and contributing to unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. The technician is expected to constructively receive feedback, identify learning needs, and take action to improve performance. They will provide patient and family instruction under the RN's direction and may apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints. Strong communication skills, understanding of cultural diversity, and commitment to workplace safety are essential. Adherence to all policies, procedures, and safety precautions, including standard precautions, is required. The technician will support department changes, quality initiatives, and document in the medical record. They must be competent in ADLs, point of care testing, telemetry monitor application, and hospital-acquired condition/patient safety indicators. Advanced skills such as phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube clamping/removal may be required based on operational needs.
