This position provides patient care, assisting with procedures and daily living activities, and supporting physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides feedback to the Registered Nurse (RN) on patient status and reports any changes. The role involves performing core nursing assistant responsibilities such as blood glucose monitoring, taking vital signs, managing intake and output, collecting specimens, and Foley care. Additionally, PCTs perform at least four of the following tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheterization, or IV catheter removal. PCTs are responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions, communicating effectively with other departments, and maintaining professional relationships. They contribute to unit activities like responding to call lights, answering phones, distributing meals, and transporting patients. The role requires constructive reception of feedback, identification of learning needs, and proactive improvement of skills and performance. PCTs may provide patient and family education under RN direction and apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints according to protocol. They must demonstrate clear communication, understanding of cultural diversity, and support for workplace safety. Adherence to all policies, procedures, and safety standards, including standard precautions, is mandatory. PCTs are encouraged to suggest and support departmental changes and quality initiatives, documenting in the medical record and completing clerical functions as needed. Core competencies include ADLs, point of care testing, weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitoring, HAC & PSI indicators, simple dressings, restraint application/removal, bladder scans, specimen collection, and patient transportation. Advanced skills may include phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia interpretation, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube clamping/removal, based on department needs.
