Casual Patient Care Technician
About The Position
UPMC is hiring a casual Patient Care Technician for the 5 Pavilion Orthopedic Unit at UPMC Passavant. The role supports UPMC’s patient-care mission by providing direct care under RN direction and helping deliver a positive patient experience. Shifts will be discussed during the interview. Title and hourly rate depend on individual qualifications, experience, and education. Listed minimum hourly rates are $18.19 for Care Attendant, $18.59 for Nursing Assistant, $18.99 for Patient Care Technician, and $19.19 for Patient Care Technician, Senior. All competencies must be achieved. The listed duties describe the general nature and level of the work and are not exhaustive.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Enrollment in a nursing program, with one of the following: one year of general healthcare experience; six months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire, transfer, or promotion; or completion of at least one nursing-program clinical rotation.
- Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire.
- Successful completion of basic information system training.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- CPR required based on AHA standards, including didactic instruction and a skills-demonstration component, within 30 days of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Nice To Haves
- Microcomputer experience preferred.
- ACLS preferred.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care under RN direction, including assistance with activities of daily living, procedures, and therapies.
- Perform core Patient Care Technician responsibilities, including vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry application, specimen collection, bladder scans, EKGs, and basic dressings.
- Respond to call lights and assist with meal delivery, patient transport, monitoring, and other unit and patient needs.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment and follow infection-control and safety protocols.
- Monitor patients and promptly report changes in condition or equipment issues.
- Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed.
- Stock supplies and assist with department activities to support unit operations.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to support coordinated care.
- Build positive relationships, support team initiatives, and seek opportunities for growth and development.
- Respond to emergent situations and provide patient supervision or assistance as appropriate.
