Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Enrollment in a Nursing Program with: a)1 year of general healthcare experience or b) 6 months experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion or c) Completion of at least 1 nursing program clinical rotation required
  • Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire
  • Successful completion of basic information system training
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Nice To Haves

  • Microcomputer experience preferred
  • ACLS preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under RN direction, including assisting with ADLs, procedures, and therapies
  • Perform core PCT responsibilities, including vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry application, specimen collection, bladder scans, EKGs, and basic dressings
  • Assist with unit and patient needs (e.g., responding to call lights, meal delivery, patient transport, and monitoring)
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment while following infection control and safety protocols
  • Monitor patients and report changes in condition or equipment issues promptly
  • Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed
  • Support unit operations by stocking supplies and assisting with department activities
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to support coordinated care
  • Demonstrate professionalism by building positive relationships, supporting team initiatives, and seeking opportunities for growth and development
  • Respond to emergent situations and provide patient supervision or assistance as appropriate
