About The Position

This position is for a Patient Care Technician on the 4E General Medical Unit, working a full-time schedule of 36 hours per week on the day shift. The role involves assisting patients with personal care needs, supporting their mobility, monitoring vital signs, and performing various patient care procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The technician will also assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, manage unit phones, and document patient care in the electronic medical record. A mandatory orientation will be held Monday through Thursday during the first week of employment.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited CNA course and successful completion of the CNA certification exam, OR EMT or paramedics training course, OR current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with completion of at least one major clinical medical or surgical rotation.
  • Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, and bed making, under the supervision of a RN/LPN.
  • Assists with exercising and ambulating patients, utilizing correct body mechanics, and maintaining the physical safety and comfort of patients under the supervision of a RN/LPN.
  • Obtains patient vital signs, input and output checks, and accu-checks, and reports abnormalities to the nurse.
  • Performs procedures such as EKGs, perineal care, emptying of foley bags, application of restraints, and backrubs as directed by RN/LPN.
  • Collects specimens such as urine, feces, and sputum, and delivers them as necessary.
  • Documents basic patient care into the electronic medical record.
  • Assists nursing and clerical staff with admitting, discharging, transferring, ambulating, transporting, and observing patients to ensure safety as directed.
  • Answers unit phones and effectively directs phone calls to the appropriate parties.
  • May perform duties of an Observation Assistant as needed.
