About The Position

UPMC Passavant is hiring a part-time Patient Care Technician for the Night Program at its McCandless location, in the 6 South Surgical Oncology department. The position works 24 hours per week on straight nights and is part of UPMC’s Inpatient Patient Care Support Career Ladder, which offers opportunities for growth and advancement. Title and rate of pay are determined by education, experience, and qualifications. Minimum hourly starting rates are Care Attendant: $18.19; Nursing Assistant: $18.59; Patient Care Technician: $18.99; and Patient Care Technician, Senior: $19.19. Employees receive an additional $2.00 per hour on top of the current off-shift differential. Candidates must have at least six months of patient care experience to qualify for the Night Program. The role provides direct patient care under RN direction and supports patients, families, and unit operations. All competencies must be achieved. Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least six months of patient care experience to qualify for the Night Program.
• Meet one of the following: one year of patient care experience; enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare program with at least one completed clinical rotation; a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field; or successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician training.
• Completion of basic information systems training.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification compliant with AHA requirements, including skills demonstration, required within 30 days of hire.
• Act 34 Criminal Clearance.
• Medication access is limited to distribution to licensed nursing staff.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under RN direction, including assistance with activities of daily living, procedures, and therapies.
• Perform core patient care technician responsibilities, including vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry application, specimen collection, bladder scans, EKGs, and basic dressings.
• Assist with unit and patient needs, such as responding to call lights, delivering meals, transporting patients, and monitoring.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment while following infection control and safety protocols.
• Monitor patients and promptly report changes in condition or equipment issues.
• Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed.
• Support unit operations by stocking supplies and assisting with department activities.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to support coordinated care.
• Build positive relationships, support team initiatives, and seek opportunities for growth and development.
• Respond to emergent situations and provide patient supervision or assistance as appropriate.
