About The Position

Geisinger is piloting a new model of care on its Advanced Acute Care Units at the Danville campus, the ACE Nursing Model of Care. This model will utilize more Patient Care Technicians to perform duties that do not require a nursing license, allowing licensed nurses to focus on advanced skills. This provides Patient Care Technicians with more opportunities for career advancement, autonomy, and greater involvement in patient care delivery. Primary duties include facilitating ADLs (hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals), taking vital signs, performing point-of-care testing, turning and repositioning patients, daily weights, equipment checks, dressing care, removal of Foley Catheters and Peripheral IVs, nasogastric tube removal, performing nasal swabs, and checking code carts and oxygen storage cabinets.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate ADLs (hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals)
  • Take vital signs
  • Perform point of care testing
  • Turn and reposition patients

  • Remove Foley Catheter and Peripheral IV

  • Perform a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
  • Maintain the patient care and unit environment consistent with policies and procedures
  • Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens
  • Perform daily, hands-on aspects of the storage, preparation and delivery of breast milk, infant and pediatric formulas
  • Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record
  • Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of the patient
  • Report any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel
  • Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens
  • Provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living
  • Provide one to one patient safety watch as assigned
  • Accurately process specimens and provide timely transport to the laboratory
  • Perform point of care patient testing and instrument maintenance and quality control
  • Assist in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies
  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students
  • Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths
  • Transcribe and process orders according to unit standard
  • Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments
  • Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests
  • Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit
  • Schedule tests, fax consults, etc.
  • Assist in ordering supplies
  • Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets
  • Operate, problem solve, and take corrective measures for clerical equipment
  • Transport non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed
  • Assist with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed
  • Perform discharge follow up phone calls / coordinate virtual discharge appointment team
  • Support / Assist staff with 5 min Drills and/or Quality Rounds - participate in regulatory readiness as needed
