Geisinger is piloting a new model of care, the ACE Nursing Model of Care, on its Advanced Acute Care Units. This model utilizes Patient Care Technicians to perform duties that do not require a nursing license, allowing licensed nurses to focus on advanced skills. This provides Patient Care Technicians with more opportunities for career advancement, autonomy, and involvement in patient care delivery. The role involves performing a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, maintaining the patient care and unit environment, and meeting the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area. This includes tasks such as advanced dressing care, suctioning, removal of Foley Catheter and peripheral IV, venipunctures, skin punctures, and formula preparation. The role also involves documentation, observing and reporting changes in patient condition, specimen collection and transport, assisting with activities of daily living, patient safety watch, point of care testing, equipment maintenance, and clerical duties related to patient throughput. Additionally, PCTs may assist with non-controlled medications and blood products, conduct discharge follow-up calls, and participate in quality initiatives.
