About The Position

The Surgical & Trauma Care Unit at University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Patient Care Technician to provide patient-centered care for patients with orthopedic, trauma, and spine conditions. This role is crucial in helping patients and their families cope with the physiological and psychological aspects of their illness or injury. The unit emphasizes teamwork, compassionate care, and a healthy work environment where staff can thrive personally and professionally. We are committed to providing the resources necessary for staff to excel and achieve their goals. Our patient population includes those with traumatic injuries, acute abdominal emergencies, complex wound management, urological procedures, and orthopedic surgeries such as reconstructive joint surgery and spine surgery.

Requirements

Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
Turn, position and ambulate patients.
Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.
Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment.
Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
