About The Position

Geisinger is seeking a highly motivated Patient Care Technician for their Central Region Float Pool. This role is part of a new ACE (Achieving Collaborative Excellence) Nursing Model of Care, which aims to provide enhanced patient care by utilizing Patient Care Technicians for duties that do not require a nursing license. The position involves working across Advanced Acute Care Units at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), Bloomsburg (GBH), and Shamokin (GSACH) Hospitals.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Minimum of 1 year of Related work experience
  • Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months
  • Ability to meet both the orientation and long-term full-time scheduling requirements of the role
  • Reliability, punctuality, and strong attendance

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate ADLs (hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals)
  • Collect vital signs & daily weights
  • Conduct Point of Care testing
  • Turn & reposition patients
  • Perform equipment checks & exchanges
  • Provide dressing care
  • Perform removal of Foley Catheter and Peripheral IV
  • Perform Nasogastric tube removal and nasal swabs
  • Check code carts and oxygen storage cabinets
  • Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse
  • Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record
  • Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of the patient according to established standards
  • Report any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner
  • Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order
  • Provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living and fulfill designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care, including patient hygiene and changing linens
  • Provide one to one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures
  • Accurately process specimens and provide timely transport of the specimen to the laboratory
  • Perform point of care patient testing and point of care instrument maintenance and quality control
  • Assist in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies
  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner
  • Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards and facilitate patient throughput activities
  • Transcribe and process orders according to unit standard
  • Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments
  • Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests
  • Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit
  • Schedule tests, fax consults, etc.
  • Assist in ordering supplies (stationery items, floor stock, patient needs, individual nursing supplies)
  • Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets
  • Operate, problem solve, and take corrective measures for clerical equipment, including scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, phones, etc.
  • Transport non-controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic or unit
  • Assist with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed
  • Assist with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed
  • Perform discharge follow up phone calls / coordinate virtual discharge appointment team
  • Support/assist staff with 5-minute Drills and/or Quality Rounds - participate in regulatory readiness as needed
