About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Stead Family Children's Hospital NICU. Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager, the technician performs specific tasks to assist the Nursing team in providing patient care. This is a 50% position, or 20 hours per week, on day and evening shifts. The schedule includes every fourth weekend and one summer and one winter holiday.

Responsibilities

Independently obtain and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
Use medical asepsis when performing tasks such as phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, and care for medically isolated patients.
Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, specimen collection, and applying binders or braces.
Perform duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, such as phlebotomy, ECG lead or 12-lead placement, and brace or pin-site care.
Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
Provide patients with personal hygiene and comfort care.
Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record intake.
Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
Participate in nursing care conferences and report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
Provide patient comfort through social interactions.
Help prepare, properly use, and care for equipment and supplies, and maintain unit neatness and cleanliness.
Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies for diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses, as needed.
Clean areas according to designated guidelines and standards, using approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and housekeeping equipment properly.
Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
