Patient Care Technician – Surgery Unit
About The Position
Sentara is hiring a Patient Care Technician for Surgery Unit 5B at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The full-time position is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., including every other weekend. The 24-bed unit cares for patients recovering from general, gynecological, colorectal, urological, plastic, vascular, and neuro-spine surgery. The team emphasizes helping patients get up and moving. Patient Care Technicians are unlicensed staff who work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to carry out delegated aspects of nursing care. They provide patient care, support admissions and discharges, follow patient-safety practices, observe patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions, and report changes to the nurse.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- American Health Associate BLS Certification required within 90 days of hire.
- Must meet at least one of the following: Sentara Care Partner Certification Program; successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) certification; completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School; emergency-services qualification including EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic; current enrollment beyond prerequisites in a clinical program after completing at least one semester of RN, LPN, RT, or PT coursework; or current work experience within the last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant.

Responsibilities
- Implement delegated aspects of nursing care under the direct supervision of a professional nurse.
- Provide patient care and support the admissions and discharge process.
- Comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional nurse.
- Observe patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any changes to the nurse.
- Help patients recovering from surgery get up and moving.
