About The Position

The Patient Care Technician - Neurology Unit - Days position is a part-time role requiring 24 hours per week. The role involves assisting patients with personal care needs, monitoring vital signs, performing basic procedures, and documenting patient care in the electronic medical record. The technician will also support nursing and clerical staff with patient management and answer unit phones. The position is available for year-round candidates only and requires attendance at a mandatory orientation. The schedule is fixed and repeating, with every other weekend required.

Requirements

  • Completion of the level of knowledge normally obtained through the completion of high school
  • Completion of an accredited CNA course and the successful completion of the CNA certification exam, EMT or paramedics training course, or current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with the completion of at least one major clinical medical or surgical rotation required
  • Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Assists patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, bed making, etc. under the supervision of a RN/LPN.
  • Assists with exercising and ambulating patient; utilizes correct body mechanics while assisting with patient mobility; maintains physical safety and comfort of patient under supervision of a RN/LPN.
  • Obtains patient vital signs, input and output checks, and accu-checks, and reports abnormalities to the nurse.
  • As directed by RN/LPN performs procedures such as EKG’s, perineineal care, emptying of foley bags, application of restraints, backrubs, etc.
  • Collects specimens such as urine, feces, sputum, and delivers as necessary.
  • Documents basic patient care into electronic medical record.
  • Assists nursing and clerical staff with admitting, discharging, transferring, ambulating, transporting, and observing patients to ensure safety as directed.
  • Adequately answers unit phones and can effectively direct phone calls to the appropriate parties.
  • May perform duties of an Observation Assistant as needed.
