About The Position

The Patient Care Technician supports the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine and follows its Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, applicable policies and procedures, and regulatory and accreditation standards. Under RN supervision, the technician performs basic patient care and supports unit operations. The schedule is three 12-hour night shifts per week, 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., with every other Friday and Saturday night and rotating holidays required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician; alternatively, nursing school students must have completed one semester of clinical experience.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Nice To Haves

• Phlebotomy experience.
• Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or graduate of a phlebotomy course.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic nursing care activities delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, measuring blood glucose, and recording intake and output.
• Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
• Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, or emotional conditions to nursing staff.
• Help keep patient rooms clean and orderly.
• Adapt to changing unit needs, organize and multitask, and function under stressful situations.
• Use critical thinking to prioritize and complete unit work as patient, staff, and unit needs change.
• Serve as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
• Answer telephone, intercom, and call lights politely; communicate information to the appropriate staff, family, or patient.
• Coordinate overall unit workflow with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed.
• Perform pre-census tasks and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed.
