About The Position

Geisinger is hiring a Patient Care Technician for its Advanced Acute Care Medical Surgical Unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre. This full-time position works 36 hours per week on evenings/overnights, with three 12-hour shifts from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. and an every-other-weekend and holiday rotation. The role offers a $1,500 sign-on bonus for eligible candidates, a minimum hiring rate of $18.94 with increased rates for experienced individuals, shift differentials of up to $3, and up to $40,000 in financial support to become a nurse. Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse or other licensed nurse, the Patient Care Technician performs a wide variety of patient care duties and helps maintain the patient care and unit environment. Duties may include enhanced care such as advanced dressing care, suctioning, and removal of Foley catheters and peripheral IVs. The technician may also obtain blood specimens, perform point-of-care testing, assist patients with activities of daily living, document patient needs and care, and report changes in condition to licensed personnel. The role also supports clinical and unit operations. Responsibilities can include specimen processing and transport, patient safety observation, order processing, coordination of tests and transportation, clerical support for patient admissions and discharges, supply ordering, equipment troubleshooting, and assistance with medication and blood-product transport. The technician may support discharge follow-up, virtual appointments, quality rounds, and regulatory readiness, and may mentor new staff and students. Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. Candidates should be motivated, dependable, punctual, and reliable, with strong teamwork and communication skills and the ability to meet the position’s full-time scheduling requirements. A high school diploma or GED is required; graduation from a specialty training program and one year of related work experience are preferred. Basic Life Support certification is required within six months. Geisinger may also consider qualified applicants enrolled in an accredited RN or LPN program for a Student Nurse Associate role.

Responsibilities

Perform advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and maintain the patient care and unit environment according to organizational policies and procedures.
Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse, potentially including advanced dressing care, suctioning, and removal of Foley catheters and peripheral IVs.
Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens when assigned, following applicable guidelines.
Document care and patient needs in the appropriate sections of the medical record; observe patients and promptly report changes in condition to licensed personnel.
Obtain, maintain the integrity of, process, and transport specimens according to orders and policy; perform point-of-care testing and instrument maintenance and quality control.
Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene and linen changes, and provide one-to-one patient safety watch when assigned.
Assist with breast milk and infant or pediatric formula storage, preparation, and delivery when applicable.
Troubleshoot and take corrective measures for care equipment and supplies.
Precept and mentor new staff and students in a positive manner.
Perform clerical duties related to admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths, and facilitate patient throughput.
Transcribe and process orders, release and confirm ordered tests, schedule tests, fax consults, and coordinate patient transportation to tests.
Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information relevant to the nursing unit.
Order stationery, floor stock, patient-needs, and individual nursing supplies; communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
Operate and troubleshoot clerical equipment and coordinate maintenance of computers, fax machines, and phones.
Transport non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed; transport blood products to and from the Blood Bank as needed.
Make discharge follow-up phone calls and coordinate virtual discharge appointments.
Support staff with five-minute drills and quality rounds, and participate in regulatory readiness as needed.
