About The Position

The Patient Care Technician Senior - MSICU (Harrisburg Hospital) position involves performing core nursing assistant responsibilities, including patient care, assisting with procedures and activities of daily living, and monitoring patient status. This role requires successful completion of a Basic Arrhythmia class and proficiency in at least four specific hospital-identified tasks such as phlebotomy, EKG, simple dressing, or Foley catheter care. The Senior PCT also provides patient and family education under the direction of an RN, manages patient restraints, and contributes to a safe and productive work environment. They are responsible for documenting in the medical record, transporting patients, and completing clerical functions. This role emphasizes clear communication, accountability, and adherence to all hospital policies and procedures, including safety and standard precautions. The Senior PCT may also perform advanced skills like basic arrhythmia interpretation, complex wound care, 12-lead EKGs, and NG tube management based on department needs. They may also be involved in medication storage and transportation between departments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Either a) 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title, OR b) 1 year of experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, or c) 1 year of experience and completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire.
  • Successful completion of patient care technician senior class.
  • Successful completion of eRecord training.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Act 34.

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program.
  • May require successful completion of the appropriate UPMC cardiac rhythm course as determined by organizational guidelines and unit-based clinical operations.
  • ACLS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care).
  • Successfully complete Basic arrhythmia class.
  • Perform at least 4 of the following hospital identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal, femoral hemostasis, or IV insertion.
  • Provide patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.
  • Assist with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.
  • Provide instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
  • Apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence and impairment in the health professions.
  • Care for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Routinely perform and be fully competent with the UPMC nursing core assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients).
  • Perform point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, hospital-acquired condition & patient safety indicator.
  • Perform simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, bladder scan, all specimen collections and ticket to ride (intra-hospital patient transportation).
  • Achieve and maintain competency and/or perform at least 1 or more of the following advanced skills based on department operational need: basic arrythmia, complex wound care, 12-lead EKGs, and NG tubes clamping and removal.
  • Assure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Contribute to universal unit activities including responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.
  • Identify and communicate learning needs to the unit director or direct leader.
  • Request assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for assignment and view problems as challenges.
  • Demonstrate awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department.
  • Support department-based projects and quality initiatives.
  • Document in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Transport cardiac monitored patients within the hospital setting.
  • Complete department clerical functions as needed.
  • Suggest and support changes within the department.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
  • May insert foley catheters and perform straight catheterization as instructed by RN.
  • May perform IV insertion, removal and dressing change.
  • May, in the course of their duties, be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients.
  • Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.
