This position provides direct patient care as directed by the RN, including all activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients. The role also involves maintaining a safe and clean environment, acquiring and distributing supplies, delivering patient nourishments, and performing UPMC nursing core responsibilities for nursing assistants. These core responsibilities include point-of-care testing (like blood glucose), taking weights and vital signs, monitoring intake and output, applying telemetry monitors, preventing Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HACs) and patient safety indicators, collecting urine specimens, applying and removing restraints, and intra-hospital transportation. The technician will also provide feedback to the RN on patient care and report changes in patient status. Additionally, the role requires constructive reception of feedback, identification of learning needs, and participation in self-review. Effective communication, understanding of cultural diversity, and support for workplace safety are essential. The technician will contribute to universal unit activities, document in the medical record, and comply with safety policies. In emergent situations, the technician will respond within the scope of the nursing assistant role and may provide one-on-one companionship/supervision to patients as required.
