UPMC East is looking for a patient care technician to work on the weekends. This role provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. The technician will also assist with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies and provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status. The role involves performing UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities and at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. The technician will also assure equipment malfunctions are reported, establish effective communication with other departments, and contribute to universal unit activities. Constructively receiving feedback, identifying and communicating learning needs, and participating in self-review are also key aspects of this role. The technician will provide instruction to patients and families under the direction of the RN and may apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints. Demonstrating clear and effective communication, understanding cultural diversity, and supporting safety in the workplace are essential. Adherence to all policies and procedures, including safety and standard precautions, is required. The role involves suggesting and supporting changes, assuming responsibility for assignments, and documenting in the medical record. The Patient Care Technician will also achieve and maintain competency in at least one advanced skill based on department operational need, such as phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, and NG tubes clamping and removal.
