About The Position

This role combines the responsibilities of a Patient Care Technician (PCT) and a Unit Secretary on the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at West Hospital. The PCT provides basic health care and support to patients under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, focusing on patient comfort, vital signs, mobility, and assisting with daily needs. The Unit Secretary/Monitor Tech monitors cardiac rhythms, coordinates communications, performs receptionist duties, and handles clerical tasks for the nursing unit, acting as a key liaison for information flow between staff, patients, and families.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of nursing aide training program OR Successful passing of STNA State Tested Nurse Aide (required if OH LTC), OR CNA Certified Nurse Aide, OR Nurses Aide state testing or completed a nursing program that had one clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation OR 1 year of relevant experience in a clinical setting
  • BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care)
  • High School Diploma
  • BLS within 30 days of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Recent experience in acute care, physician's office, home health/hospice, or long-term care facility, with a preference for the setting in which they are applying
  • EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic patient care including care and comfort, vital sign measurement, personal care and hygiene, and assists with mobility.
  • Acts as a liaison between patient and nurse to report changes and/or concerns.
  • Provides high-level customer service to all patients, patient's family, visitors, and employees.
  • Provides accurate, precise, timely documentation when applicable for patient care.
  • Participates in hand-off/report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs.
  • Performs delegated tasks once competency has been validated.
  • Mobilizes patients using therapeutic transfer techniques which foster independence and safety.
  • Fosters independence by encouraging patients to complete tasks as independently as possible.
  • Individualizes care based on patient's interests and hobbies.
  • Constantly observes and accurately interprets cardiac monitors.
  • Systematically scans and interprets screens.
  • Identifies and reports changes in baseline rhythm patterns.
  • Differentiates life threatening changes from “slow evolving” changes.
  • Appropriately notifies/pages charge nurse or designate of witnessed changes.
  • Documents changes for review RN (i.e., saves, times, strips).
  • Sets and checks alarm system.
  • Maintains ongoing documentation of monitor pattern during procedures/Code Blue as requested/necessary.
  • Keeps an updated record of patients’ rhythms.
  • Gives report to relief watcher.
  • Handles incoming and external telephone calls.
  • Coordinates communication between physicians, shift lead, staff and ancillary departments.
  • Provides friendly assistance to patient's family and visitors.
  • Communicates in a constructive and positive manner.
  • Collaborates intra- and interdepartmentally to meet patient's needs.
  • Handles patient information in a confidential manner.
  • Demonstrates effective communication with patients and families by listening, providing support and making referral to appropriate sources of help, if needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with others.
  • Responds to conflict effectively in an open, constructive manner.
  • Effectively utilizes channels of communication according to organization structure.
  • Assists in orienting new personnel.
  • Identifies own learning needs and collaborates with manager in planning to meet them.
  • Enters and retrieves patient information in data entry systems.
  • Maintains accurate statistics.
  • Assists in performance improvement activities such as data collection and reporting and chart retrieval.
  • Maintains and processes completed patient charts.
  • Orders department supplies.
  • Attends Department Meetings.
  • Performs other duties that assist in the smooth performance of the department.
