About The Position

The Patient Care Tech IHR reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values, adheres to its Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. Under RN supervision, the Patient Care Tech performs basic patient care activities and supports unit operations.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Nursing students must have completed one clinical rotation, or the candidate must be a Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician.
Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.

Nice To Haves

Phlebotomy experience.
Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or a phlebotomy course.

Responsibilities

Perform basic nursing care activities delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, measuring blood glucose, and recording intake and output.
Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
Report abnormal findings and changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
Help keep patient rooms clean and orderly.
Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and multitasking, and function under stressful situations.
Use critical thinking to prioritize and complete unit work promptly as the needs of the unit, patients, and staff change.
Serve as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
Answer telephone calls, intercoms, and call lights politely, use appropriate telephone etiquette, and communicate information to the appropriate staff, family, or patient.
Manage overall unit workflow in coordination with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed.
Perform pre-census tasks and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed.
