This PRN position requires a minimum of 48 hours per month, with 12-hour shifts available (7 am-7 pm and 7 pm-7 am), and weekend shifts varying. The role involves travel between various Emory Healthcare locations. The internal travel team offers flexibility, allowing team members to tailor their work-life balance. The Patient Care Tech performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or LPN. Responsibilities include room cleaning, operating clinical equipment, assisting with emergencies and procedures, collecting and transporting specimens, and completing necessary forms. Effective communication with patients, families, and the care team is essential. Maintaining unit-specific competencies, promoting a supportive and healing environment, and adhering to safety standards are key aspects of the role. The position also involves assisting with various patient care tasks, observing and reporting patient status, transporting patients and specimens, contributing to patient admission/transfer/discharge processes, assisting with postmortem care, and utilizing technology for related tasks. Participation in performance improvement programs, serving as a role model for compliance with standards, and potentially assisting with research projects and orienting new staff are also expected.

Requirements

  • 2.5 years of direct patient care experience.
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions and to maintain nursing records and charts.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification by the State of Georgia as a Certified Nursing Assistant OR currently enrolled in an accredited Registered Nurse program and have completed two clinical semesters.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification in accordance with the American Heart Association is required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or LPN.
  • Cleans the patient's room.
  • Operates various clinical equipment.
  • Helps with emergencies.
  • Assists with patient procedures.
  • Collects and transports patient specimens.
  • Completes applicable forms.
  • Communicates with patients, families, and members of the patient care team.
  • Maintains hospital and unit-specific competencies.
  • Promotes a supportive and healing environment.
  • Assists in emergency situations as directed by an RN/LPN.
  • Ensures that prescribed measures related to hygiene, comfort, and rest are provided.
  • Complies with Standard Precautions guidelines, Infection Control procedures, and safety standards.
  • Assists in the use of bag-valve-mask device, anti-embolism stockings, pneumatic compression stockings, oxygen, suction equipment, incentive spirometer, emergency cart and bedside glucose monitoring machine.
  • Operates converter chair, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, non-invasive BP monitors, automatic thermometer, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, and computers.
  • Records patient intake and output.
  • Assists RN/LPN in providing patient care according to individual needs by assisting with range of motion, ambulation, patient transfers, diet, elimination and hygiene.
  • Observes and reports significant or unusual information about the patient and environment to the RN/LPN and documents appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Transports patients and patient specimens throughout the hospital as needed.
  • Contributes to the completion of patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Assists with postmortem care.
  • Utilizes appropriate technology to complete all related processes.
  • Participates in unit-based and system-wide Performance Improvement program as required by department leadership.
  • Serves as a resource/model through compliance with standards of care and with Department of Nursing and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • May participate in research projects impacting patient care areas.
  • Participates in the orientation of nursing support assistants to the unit.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as required.
