The Patient Care Specialist (PCS) plays a crucial role in direct and indirect patient care, working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and accepting delegation from other care team members. This role involves providing care, collecting and documenting patient data, and communicating with patients, families, and the care team. Indirectly, the PCS supports the unit by maintaining the environment of care and performing clerical duties. The position requires strong organizational skills, teamwork, a commitment to continuous learning, quality, and excellence, and proficiency in multiple computer applications. The PCS will work with patients across the lifespan with various conditions.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age prior to start date.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with other technological devices (i.e. cell phone, laptop, etc.).
  • Ability to work irregular hours (days, evenings, holidays, weekends).
  • Self-motivated/independent.
  • Able and willing to work with all populations served.
  • Working knowledge of computers and software applications required.
  • Demonstrated ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, accurate and efficient.
  • Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs is required: American Heart Association or American Red Cross. If a candidate does not currently have the required certification, education and testing will be included as part of the orientation and training program.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalency preferred.
  • PCS, HUC, MA, NS, Ward Clerk experience.
  • Demonstration of medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Accepts delegation from care team members: physicians, advanced practice providers, RN, LPN, MA in meeting the needs of the patient/family.
  • Provides direct patient care, collects and documents patient care data.
  • Communicates information to patients, families, and care team members.
  • Supports the unit by helping to maintain the environment of care.
  • Performs unit-based clerical duties.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and teamwork.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning, quality, and excellence.
  • Utilizes multiple computer applications.
  • Works with patients throughout the life span with multiple conditions.
