This role provides support to the patient care team, as well as directly attending to certain, specified needs of the patient. The Patient Care Sitter provides constant observation and monitoring of assigned patients to ensure safety and prevention of injury. They receive reports from the RN/Charge RN, including any patient specific behaviors to monitor. The sitter courteously greets patients and their visitors, identifies self, and explains purpose utilizing AIDET communication model. They observe and report to the RN/Charge RN all patient concerns or changes in condition, and promptly call for assistance as needed. The sitter provides care within trained job responsibilities, assists patients to the restroom and stays with the patient to keep them safe, and walks patients in the corridor as needed. They do not leave the patient unless relieved by another staff member and notify the RN/Charge RN if tubes, IV, catheter, etc. become disconnected. The sitter reports defective equipment to the RN/Charge RN and accompanies the patient to other areas of the hospital for diagnostic tests or upon transfer to other units. They utilize appropriate patient handling equipment according to the patient’s care plan and transport patient equipment and belongings as required with the patient. The sitter maintains a safe, orderly, and well-equipped environment, keeps the patient room neat and orderly, and evaluates the patient’s environment for possible hazards and removes them. They wash hands before and after patient contact and follow personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate, and follow isolation procedures according to the Infection Control Policy. The sitter competently utilizes technology to document as appropriate and demonstrates understanding of the use of unit technology i.e. call systems, bed controls and TV controls.
