About The Position

The Patient Care Nurse Assistant (PCNA) works on Mercy Hospital’s 28-bed Medical/Surgical Unit, also known as the Clinical Decision Unit, which provides care for telemetry and observation patients. The unit is typically fast-paced and uses non-invasive methods to assess, diagnose, and treat medical concerns. The PCNA coordinates with other caregivers to create a welcoming, healing environment for patients and supports care under the supervision of an RN. Duties include hourly rounding, assessing fall risks, and documenting input and output. The role offers opportunities for educational advancement, skills development, and career progression. PRN caregivers work varying days and hours, including weekends and holidays.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross; if not already held, certification must be obtained during the new-hire period.
• For nursing students, BLS certification through the AHA or American Red Cross is required upon hire.
• Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W), or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered.

Nice To Haves

• State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA).
• Nursing students who have recently completed at least one clinical rotation as part of an accredited nursing school program.

Responsibilities

• Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN, including taking vital signs and weights; assisting with personal care and activities of daily living; patient transfers and transport; pulse oximetry; point-of-care testing; dressing changes; applying external monitoring devices; and removing urinary Foley catheters.
• Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to an RN.
• Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.
• Participate in hourly rounding, assess fall risks, and document patient input and output.
