About The Position

The Patient Care Nurse Assistant (PCNA) works on the 6 Medical Unit at South Pointe Hospital, a fast-paced medical unit that cares for patients with a range of conditions, including pneumonia, congestive heart failure, infectious disease, asthma, and COPD exacerbation, and provides care for chronic ventilator patients. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the PCNA assists with direct patient care and has extensive patient contact, including support with activities of daily living and ambulation. The role requires recognizing basic changes in patient status, flexibility, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. The position offers hands-on experience working with nurses and physicians.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) credential.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross; if not already held, it must be obtained during the new-hire period.
• For nursing students, BLS certification is required upon hire.
• Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W), or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered.

Nice To Haves

• Nursing student who has recently completed at least one clinical rotation as part of an accredited nursing school program.

Responsibilities

• Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN.
• Obtain vital signs and weights.
• Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living.
• Assist with patient transfers and transport.
• Perform pulse oximetry and point-of-care testing.
• Assist with dressing changes, apply external monitoring devices, and remove urinary Foley catheters.
• Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to an RN.
• Help keep patients’ rooms clean and orderly.
