About The Position

The PCN I is enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the PCN I performs delegated patient care activities in accordance with the age-specific needs of the patient to ensure safe, accurate, and high-quality care. Franciscan Health Munster Campus is seeking a Patient Care Novice I (PRN Alternating) for their Emergency Department.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in nursing program fully accredited by either the CCNE or NLNAC.
  • Must have successfully completed one full rotation (semester, quarter, etc.) of nursing clinicals through a fully accredited school of nursing.
  • Must be in good standing in their program.
  • Basic Life Support Program (BLS) - American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Documents patient care information to ensure timely and accurate completion of patient care records.
  • Communicates and reports patient data and information to the RN to ensure appropriate and timely care.
  • Provides psychological, physical, and emotional support to patients, answering questions about treatment plans, medications, diet, or physician instructions.
  • Assists in the onboarding and training of new coworkers.
  • Verifies inventory levels, orders, receives, and stores supplies and equipment, and maintains inventory and equipment logs.
  • Performs delegated patient care activities as directed by medical staff, aligned with age-specific needs.
  • Provides activities of daily living (ADLs) including hygiene, assistance with feeding and elimination, positioning, mobility, and ambulation.
  • Gathers patient information such as vital signs, point-of-care glucose testing, intake and output, weights, and specimen collection.
  • Performs urinary catheter and ostomy care.
  • Restocks patient room and unit supplies and performs equipment checks.
  • Transports patients by wheelchair, cart, bed, or bassinet.
  • Answers call-lights and telephones.
  • Records observations, actions, and interventions into the medical record.
