About The Position

CenExel is a leading nationwide clinical research site and patient network serving the life sciences industry, specializing in CNS and early phase studies. Their 18 Centers of Excellence provide medical and scientific support in clinical trial design and execution, utilizing world-class PIs, advanced patient engagement, premium data analytics, and integrated operations. This Patient Care Technician I position works under moderate supervision within the clinical research setting, specifically with individuals who have psychiatric diagnoses participating in clinical trials. The role involves advocating for clients, ensuring their psychosocial needs are met, assisting with client retention, and supporting them throughout their participation in research.

Requirements

  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have GED equivalency.
  • 0-2 years experience in healthcare.
  • Strong team/consensus building skills.
  • Ability to effectively resolve conflict and cope with crisis situations.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate and professional boundaries with clients and staff.
  • Ability to multitask, have meticulous attention for detail, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to demonstrate knowledge and skill in techniques of good clinical judgment, be a team player and be willing to work a flexible schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses research participants' current psychosocial needs and identifies the case management needs.
  • Observes and reports personality and/or behavior changes in subjects to the charge person or charge nurse.
  • Interacts closely with clients to assist them in problem solving and to de-escalate subjects who become upset or belligerent.
  • Communicates appropriately with subjects while assisting them with ADL’s, supplying them with cigarette breaks as allowed in the protocol.
  • Provides the subjects with meals and snacks as allowed in the study, ensuring subjects adhere to the protocol specific dietary and smoking restrictions.
  • Assists the subjects with meal prep, meal ordering, meal choices, and delivers meals depending on location.
  • Assists subjects with laundry and housekeeping tasks as needed.
  • Assists with nightly room and equipment checks.
  • Assists with dispensing medications (if properly certified) as instructed by MD or Medication Administration Record.
  • Communicates with MD in person or over the phone to receive PRN or STAT medication changes as needed for subjects.
  • Assists clients with discharge planning as needed.
  • Sets key goals to be accomplished with the research participants during their inpatient stay by working with each client to identify and prioritize needs and assisting with needs as relevant.
  • Assists with completing discharge summaries for client discharging from the CRU (Clinical Research Unit).
  • Ensures all information, medications, follow-up appointments are accurate, and informs treatment providers, care providers, family, referral sources of discharge.
  • Coordinates transportation for discharge, appointments off unit (visit to SSI office, interview for housing), doctor appointments and ensures all calendars are updated with necessary information.
  • Assists clients with other miscellaneous needs while on the unit (paying rent, paying bills, checking in with probation officers, purchasing items to maintain ADLs, obtaining clothes from shelters etc.)
  • Coordinates, supervises and documents family meetings, case manager visits to the CRU.
  • Assists with completion of applications for healthcare coverage, social security and food stamps.
  • Develops relationships with the representatives in other agencies to support research participants in attaining services such as housing, additional mental health care, medication, medical resources, financial assistance, legal advocacy, or other as needed.
  • Develops and manages weekly groups with inpatient clients focusing on psychosocial needs.
  • Updates database upon discharge from CRU and/or study termination to ensure all information about subject (i.e disposition, medication, insurance, etc) is accurate and current.
  • Supports and ensures strictest adherence to best practices, FDA Code of Federal Regulations, ICH (International Conference on Harmonization), GCP (Good Clinical Practices), CenExel standard operating procedures, site working Practices, protocol, and company guidelines and policies.
