The Patient Care Leader (PCL) in the Emergency Room provides operational and clinical leadership during their assigned shift. This role serves as a clinical resource, demonstrating transformational coaching and mentoring skills with clinical staff. The PCL exhibits strong critical thinking and relationship skills, including conflict management and resolution, and models Behaviors of Excellence. They partner with Care Management, clinical nurses, and physicians to support the interdisciplinary plan of care, ensuring smooth patient flow and timely admissions. The PCL also coaches staff nurses on discharge procedures, maintains visibility on the unit, and collaborates with the Clinical Manager on financial outcomes and productivity targets. This role leads the provision of patient-centered care, fosters positive relationships, and promotes a professional and caring atmosphere. The PCL demonstrates autonomy in decision-making, rounds on staff and patients, and promotes accountability for evidence-based practice and quality improvement. They lead safety huddles, ensure compliance with core measures, and facilitate compliance with regulatory and patient care standards. The PCL also attends and assists with rapid responses, ensures hourly rounding and bedside shift report, identifies high-risk patients, and handles first-line service recovery. They use the chain of command for issue resolution, follow up on safety events, and anticipate resource needs. The PCL supports department scheduling, makes appropriate patient assignments, assigns breaks and lunches, and validates completion of duties. They ensure adequate supplies and equipment, foster professional development, and perform the duties of a Registered Nurse. Additionally, the PCL assists with onboarding new associates, facilitates critical thinking and clinical skills, leads and participates in Shared Governance and quality improvement initiatives, and contributes to performance management. They encourage staff to pursue certification and continuing education and act as a change agent, describing elements of the Magnet Model.
