About The Position

Responsible for the registration of patients, including patient interviews, obtaining and entering accurate demographic and insurance information, insurance verification, explanation of hospital policies, obtaining consents, and collection of any point of service or outstanding payments. Handles routine patient inquiries and problems. This role requires a detail-oriented individual who can work in a high-paced environment and possesses exceptional customer service skills.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Minimum of one year customer service experience.
  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a stressful, high-paced environment and take appropriate action.
  • Intermediate computer typing and literacy.
  • Reading and writing skills.
  • Organizing and filing skills.
  • Professional phone etiquette.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of phone, computer, fax, and copy machine skills.
  • Effective communication in English.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Register patients by conducting interviews, obtaining and entering accurate demographic and insurance information.
  • Verify insurance coverage, including Medicare.
  • Explain hospital policies, obtain consents, and collect point-of-service or outstanding payments.
  • Handle routine patient inquiries and problems.
  • Answer phones, route callers, take messages, and provide routine information.
  • Perform clerical duties such as faxing, photocopying, typing, and computer data entry/retrieval.
  • Request supplies and maintain equipment.
  • Gather and enter patient demographics for accurate registration and pre-registration.
  • Explain cost estimates and insurance benefits.
  • Screen Self-Pay and underinsured patients to determine financial needs and refer to appropriate departments.
  • Collect and post all payments accurately.
  • Provide timely notification of ED admissions to required payors.
  • Collect and process patient valuables.
  • Transcribe faxed orders into Epic and work with doctor's offices on order corrections.
  • Coordinate multiple appointments for consecutively scheduled services.
  • Correct errors in assigned work queues.
  • Maintain surveillance of EMS radio and hotline, ensuring appropriate clinical staff is standing by.
  • Assist with patient sitting as needed.
  • Retrieve medical records from in-house and external facilities.
  • Direct and assist patient visitors.
  • Maintain emergency department stats tracking.
  • Maintain admit/transfer log.
  • Conduct ED hand hygiene audits.
  • Support staff in the provision of care.
  • Assist with facilitating transfers to a higher level of care.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to meet department needs.
