About The Position

The MGH Transplant Unit is seeking a Patient Care Assistant with day and night availability to provide rotating weekend and holiday coverage. The Transplant Unit is a twenty-one-bed special care unit located in Boston, MA. These beds are designated for acutely ill, organ transplant patients. The patient population on Blake 6 is comprised of pre and post renal, pancreas, liver, cardiac and lung transplant recipients. Additionally, patients may be admitted to the Transplant Unit for treatment of acute allograft rejection, opportunistic infections and soft tissue infections. Long term allograft recipients who require other surgical procedures may also be admitted to Blake 6. Patients range in age from 15 to 70+ years. The unit is HEPA filtered and pressurized (positive) to help protect this immunocompromised population.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
• Basic Life Support [BLS]
• Certified Medical Assistant [National Certification]
• Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician [National Certification]
• Experience working in patient care/elder care 0-1 year preferred
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Strong patient/customer service skills.
• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
• Proficient in computer skills to work efficiently with electronic medical records.

Nice To Haves

• At least 1 year of inpatient experience within an acute care setting.

Responsibilities

• Performs patient care-related duties and clinical functions as assigned, including, but not limited to, performing and documenting point of care, vital signs, EKGs, bathing and other sanitary needs of patients, transferring and assisting with ambulation of patients, 1:1 patient observation for safety purposes, and phlebotomy. Assist RNs and physicians with other exams and treatments as required.
• Completes all documentation such as height, weight, intake of fluids and food, output of urine/stool/vomit/other drainage, and blood glucose results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Assists patients with food tray setup, eating, and feeding, as needed.
• Ensures that patient rooms are stocked, equipped, and cleaned appropriately, as needs indicate and as patient volumes change.
• Retrieves equipment from other areas, sets up equipment, cleans equipment between patient use, and reports malfunctioning equipment per organizational policy.
• Assists with admitting and discharging patients.
• Facilitates orientation of new PCA team members as directed.
• Interacts with patients, visitors, and other care team members effectively.
• Communicates with nursing staff effectively and in a timely manner regarding issues related to patient care and condition.
• Fosters a positive, collaborative team environment that promotes teamwork and professional growth.
