Patient Care Assistant Med Surg
About The Position
The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) on the Med Surg unit at Chelsea Hospital provides direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. This role is crucial in maintaining a safe and supportive environment for patients, considering their age-specific, developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs. The unit specializes in post-operative surgical care, telemetry, stroke care, chronic pain management, and patient education for both Medical-Surgical patients and those with chronic head pain. Training is provided to ensure colleagues are well-prepared for success in assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, toileting, positioning, transferring, ambulation, and feeding. Accurate recording of patient information is also a key responsibility.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
- Ability to lift greater than 35 pounds using mechanical assistance.

Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse, considering age-specific, developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and conducive patient care environment.
- Assist patients in completing ADLs, including bathing, showering, toileting, positioning, turning, transferring, ambulation using assistive devices, and feeding with menu selection.
- Record patient information and required data in appropriate areas to meet documentation requirements.
