About The Position

This position is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of patients, specimens, and medication, throughout the hospital as assigned. The role involves ensuring patients are transported safely, timely, and efficiently, which may include assisting with lifting and moving patients. The attendant must be observant of patient stress or issues during transport and seek assistance immediately, monitor vital signs and equipment like O2 and IVs, and alert appropriate personnel to any problems. They are also responsible for informing supervisors of delays, maintaining transport equipment, completing departmental records, and performing proper patient handoffs. A key aspect of the role is verifying patient identification using ID bands and two patient identifiers before any transportation. The position requires adherence to all hospital policies and procedures, understanding and demonstrating safe lifting and transport techniques, and practicing universal precautions. Strong communication skills are essential for interacting courteously, tactfully, empathetically, and professionally with patients, families, staff, and physicians. The attendant must be able to follow directions, comply with HIPAA, and may be responsible for transporting specimens, oxygen, and stretchers. Active participation in safety initiatives and completion of safety-related competencies are also required. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA American Heart Association or ARC American Red Cross upon hire.
  • Demonstrated communication skills to interact with courtesy, tact, empathy, and professionalism in daily interaction with patients, their families, clinical licensed and non-licensed staff, physicians, and management.
  • Ability to understand and follow direction.
  • Ability to comply with HIPAA confidentiality requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients safely, timely, and efficiently.
  • Assist with lifting patients on and off beds and moving patients throughout the hospital.
  • Recognize if the patient is experiencing stress or other issues during transport and immediately seek assistance.
  • Monitor O2, IV’s, catheters, etc. and alert appropriate personal with problems.
  • Inform supervisor/dispatcher of all delays within 10 minutes.
  • Maintain transport equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.
  • Return all equipment to the appropriate location.
  • Maintain and complete all departmental records.
  • Complete proper handoff before removing patient from dept/unit.
  • Check all patients ID bands and complete two patient identifiers prior to transportation.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures.
  • Understand and demonstrate safe lifting and transport techniques.
  • Know and practice universal precautions as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate communication skills to interact with courtesy, tact, empathy, and professionalism in daily interactions with patient, their families, clinical licensed and non-licensed staff, physicians, and management.
  • Understand and follow direction.
  • Comply with HIPAA confidentiality requirements.

  • Complete all position and unit safety related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.
