This position is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of patients, specimens, and medication, throughout the hospital as assigned. The role involves ensuring patients are transported safely, timely, and efficiently, which may include assisting with lifting patients on and off beds. The attendant must be able to recognize if a patient is experiencing stress or other issues during transport and immediately seek assistance. They will monitor O2, IV’s, catheters, etc., and alert appropriate personnel to any problems. The position requires informing supervisors/dispatchers of all delays within 10 minutes, maintaining transport equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner, and returning all equipment to its appropriate location. Maintaining and completing all departmental records and performing proper handoff before removing a patient from a department/unit are also key responsibilities. The attendant must check all patient ID bands and complete two patient identifiers prior to transportation. Adherence to all hospital policies and procedures, understanding and demonstrating safe lifting and transport techniques, and practicing universal precautions are mandatory. Demonstrated communication skills are essential for interacting with courtesy, tact, empathy, and professionalism with patients, families, staff, physicians, and management. The ability to understand and follow directions and comply with HIPAA confidentiality requirements is necessary. Responsibilities may extend to transporting specimens, oxygen, stretchers, and other items as assigned. Active participation in safety initiatives and risk mitigation, along with completing all position and unit safety-related competencies and requirements, is expected. Other duties as assigned will also be part of the role.
