This position is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of patients, specimens, and medication, throughout the hospital as assigned. The Patient Attendant will transport patients safely, timely, and efficiently, which may include assisting with lifting patients on and off beds and moving them throughout the hospital. This role requires the ability to recognize if a patient is experiencing stress or other issues during transport and immediately seek assistance. The attendant will monitor O2, IV’s, catheters, etc., and alert appropriate personnel of any problems 100% of the time. They will inform their supervisor/dispatcher of all delays within 10 minutes. The role also involves maintaining transport equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner, returning all equipment to its appropriate location, and maintaining and completing all departmental records. A proper handoff must be completed before removing a patient from a department/unit. The attendant must check all patient ID bands and complete two patient identifiers prior to transportation. Adherence to all hospital policies and procedures is required, along with understanding and demonstrating safe lifting and transport techniques, and practicing universal precautions as appropriate. Demonstrated communication skills are necessary to interact with courtesy, tact, empathy, and professionalism in daily interactions with patients, their families, clinical licensed and non-licensed staff, physicians, and management. The ability to understand and follow directions and comply with HIPAA confidentiality requirements is essential. The attendant may be responsible for transporting specimens, oxygen, stretchers, and other items as assigned. Active participation in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures is expected, along with completing all position and unit safety-related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.
