The Patient Access Specialist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NMHC, adheres to the organizations Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. This role involves practicing a patient-first philosophy, maintaining high standards of customer service, and fostering a team atmosphere. The specialist will respond to patient questions and concerns, manage extraordinary issues by notifying a Team Lead or Operations Coordinator, and maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations. A key aspect of the role is providing exceptional customer service to create a positive first impression of Northwestern Medicine, exceeding consumer requests, and alerting management to any issues or concerns requiring escalation. The specialist will also be responsible for correctly collecting patient demographic information, interacting with various hospital departments and physician offices to guide patients through NMHC systems, and reaching out to patients to schedule appointments. Additional duties include performing medical necessity checks, communicating financial account issues to patients, completing out-of-pocket estimations, providing training and education, managing work schedules efficiently, and participating in Quality Assurance reviews. The role also requires utilizing effective service recovery skills and adhering to all departmental policies and compliance requirements, ensuring patients are not put at financial or safety risk.
