The Patient Access Representative (PAR) is responsible for patient registration and scheduling. Depending on the setting, the PAR may perform only registration or scheduling duties, or both. In all settings, the PAR performs additional duties as assigned, which may vary by location. The role involves greeting patients, verifying demographics, registering/scheduling patients, handling paperwork, creating electronic files, scanning and routing documents, educating patients, obtaining signatures, establishing financial responsibility, collecting co-payments, and potentially working through a registration work queue to resolve issues. In a scheduling role, the PAR schedules appointments, obtains referrals, conducts pre-authorization, arranges interpreter services, checks patients in/out, and offers enrollment to additional resources. They collaborate with the nursing team and providers to coordinate appointments, manage provider schedules, resolve work queue issues, and handle recall and waitlists. The role may also involve operating multi-line telephones, serving as a switchboard operator, preparing charts, organizing documents, discussing pre-payment responsibilities, initiating financial assistance, tracking patient visits, managing health information, working on reports, administering assessments, coordinating Telemed appointments, and performing charge entry/billing. Additionally, the PAR serves as a mentor, displays professionalism, promotes respect and cooperation, works independently and as part of a team, maintains confidentiality, and requires excellent customer service and empathy. A working knowledge of medical terminology and professional written communication is necessary.
